Pre-Operative Instructions for Your Standard and Wisdom Teeth Extractions

At Renwick Dental, we want to make sure you feel well-prepared and at ease before your standard or wisdom teeth extraction appointment. Please review the following instructions to help your procedure go smoothly and to ensure the best possible recovery.

Before Your Appointment

Eat Normally

  • It is important to eat before your appointment. You will be given local anaesthetic which will last a few hours after your procedure. Once the anaesthetic has worn off, we suggest a soft diet and nothing to hot.

Medications

  • Take all regular medications as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by your dentist or oral surgeon.
  • If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics or other medications for your procedure, please take them as directed.
  • If you are on blood thinners or have any other medical conditions that may affect the procedure, inform us ahead of time.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly on the day of your appointment. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps minimize the risk of infection.
  • Avoid using mouthwash or products containing alcohol before your visit.

Health Updates

  • If you’re feeling unwell, have a cold, flu, or new medical conditions (such as heart conditions), please notify us before the procedure.
  • Inform us about any allergies, especially to medications, anesthesia, or dental materials.

Smoking and Alcohol

  • Refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol at least 24 hours before your procedure, as both can interfere with the healing process and your body’s response to treatment.

What to Expect During the Appointment

  • The area to be treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable.
  • For standard extractions, we will carefully loosen and remove the tooth or teeth as needed.
  • For wisdom teeth extractions, the procedure may involve cutting the gum tissue and/or removing bone to fully extract the tooth.
  • After the extraction, we may place gauze to control bleeding and promote clotting. If required, stitches may be placed to help with healing.

Aftercare and Next Steps

  • Once the procedure is complete, you will receive specific aftercare instructions, including:
    • Managing Pain and Swelling: You may experience some discomfort and swelling after the procedure. Ice packs, over-the-counter pain medication, or any prescribed medication will help manage this.
    • Avoiding Certain Foods: For the first few days after your extraction, avoid eating hard, chewy, or hot foods. Stick to soft, cool foods that won’t irritate the extraction site.
    • Gauze and Bleeding: Bite gently on the gauze provided to control any bleeding. Change the gauze as needed.
    • Stitches: If stitches are placed, they may dissolve on their own. If not, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for their removal.
    • Oral Hygiene: Continue brushing your teeth, but avoid the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After that, rinse gently with warm salt water to help with healing.
    • Rest and Recovery: Take it easy for a few days. Avoid vigorous physical activity for at least 3-5 days to prevent complications.

Follow-Up Appointment

  • We will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and address any concerns you may have. Please feel free to call us if you experience excessive pain, prolonged bleeding, or signs of infection, such as fever.
