Pre-Operative Instructions for Your Crown and Bridge Appointment

At Renwick Dental, we want to ensure you feel informed and comfortable heading into your crown or bridge appointment. Please review the following instructions to help your procedure go smoothly and achieve the best results.

Before Your Appointment

Eat Normally

  • Have a light meal before your appointment — you’ll be able to eat after, but the numbing may make it uncomfortable right away.
  • Avoid chewing gum or sticky foods before your visit.

Medications

  • Take all regular medications unless instructed otherwise.
  • If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics or special medication for your appointment, please take them as directed.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss your teeth as usual before your appointment. Good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of infection.
  • Avoid using whitening toothpaste or products around the appointment time, as they won’t affect your new restoration.

Health Updates

  • Let us know if you’re feeling unwell, have a cold, flu, or any new medical conditions — especially heart conditions or if you’re pregnant.
  • Inform us of any allergies, particularly to medications or dental materials.

Temporary Crowns/Bridges

  • If this is your preparation visit, we’ll be placing a temporary crown or bridge. It’s designed to protect your tooth while your final restoration is being made.
  • We’ll provide care instructions for your temporary at the appointment.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

  • Refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before your procedure — both can affect healing and your body’s response to treatment.

What to Expect During the Appointment

  • The area will be numbed with local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.
  • We will shape the tooth/teeth, take digital or traditional impressions, and fit a temporary crown or bridge (if required).
  • Your final crown or bridge is custom-made in a dental lab and will be fitted at your second visit.

Aftercare and Next Steps

At the end of your appointment, we’ll provide instructions for caring for your temporary crown or bridge, including:  Avoiding sticky, hard, or chewy foods, how to clean around the temporary restoration, what to do if the temporary comes loose

We’ll also schedule your follow-up appointment to fit your final crown or bridge.
