Post-Operative Care for Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your wisdom tooth extraction. We know surgery can be a little daunting, so our priority is to ensure your recovery is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Below are important instructions to help manage any discomfort and promote proper healing.

What to Expect After Your WisdomEase Appointment

Bleeding
It’s normal to experience some bleeding or oozing from the extraction sites for the first 24 hours. You’ll leave your appointment with gauze placed over the area—please bite down firmly and keep it in place for at least 30–60 minutes.

If bleeding continues, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and bite down again for another 30 minutes. Light bleeding or pink saliva is normal for up to 1–2 days.

Swelling and Bruising
Swelling typically peaks around 48–72 hours after the procedure and may last for several days. You might also notice some mild bruising around your jaw or cheeks. Use a cold compress (15–20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off) during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.

After 72 hours, switch to warm compresses if swelling persists.

Discomfort
Some discomfort or soreness is normal and should gradually improve over the following days. You may also feel stiffness in the jaw or throat, especially after having multiple teeth removed.

Stitches
If you had dissolvable sutures placed, they will come out on their own in 7–10 days. If we used stitches that need to be removed, we’ll schedule you for a quick follow-up appointment.

Post-Extraction Care Instructions

Oral Hygiene

  • Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or brush directly over the extraction site for the first 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm saltwater (1 tsp of salt in a cup of warm water) 2–3 times a day, especially after meals.
  • Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your mouth as normal, avoiding the extraction area until it begins to heal.

Diet

  • Stick to soft foods for at least 3–5 days (e.g., yoghurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, soup).
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or hot foods that can irritate the site.
  • Refrain from using straws for at least 5–7 days to avoid dislodging the blood clot and developing dry socket, a painful post-op complication.

Pain Relief

  • You may take over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or paracetamol as instructed.
  • If we prescribed medication, take it as directed.
  • A cold compress can help ease discomfort during the first two days.

Rest

  • Rest is important. Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or intense exercise for at least 2–3 days.
  • Keep your head elevated with an extra pillow while sleeping the first night to help reduce bleeding and swelling.

    What to Expect Moving Forward

    Healing Time
The initial healing phase takes about 1–2 weeks, with most discomfort and swelling subsiding within the first 5–7 days. The extraction sites may take several weeks to fully close over.

    Dry Socket Prevention
To avoid dry socket, it’s important to:

    • Not use straws
    • Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 5 days
    • Avoid aggressive spitting or rinsing in the first 24 hours
    • Eat a soft-food diet and chew away from the extraction site

    Follow-Up
We’ll let you know if a follow-up appointment is needed to check on healing or remove any stitches.
