Post-Operative Care for Fissure Sealants
Thank you for visiting Renwick Dental for your fissure sealant treatment. Sealants are a simple yet effective way to protect the grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of back teeth—especially in children and teens. They act as a barrier to help prevent tooth decay in the areas most prone to cavities.
What to Expect After Your Appointment
No Downtime
Fissure sealants are a non-invasive preventive treatment, so you or your child can return to normal activities, school, or eating right after the appointment.
Slight Bite Difference
The sealant may feel a little raised or different at first when biting down. This sensation usually settles within a few days as the sealant smooths out naturally through chewing.
Post-Sealant Care Instructions
Eating and Drinking
- You can eat and drink as normal straight after the appointment.
- Avoid sticky lollies or very hard foods for the rest of the day to allow the sealant to fully set in place.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue regular brushing and flossing—sealants are just one part of decay prevention.
- Encourage twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste and daily flossing to keep the rest of the tooth and mouth healthy.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Checkups
We’ll check the condition of the sealants at your regular dental visits. If any sealants wear down or come off over time (especially due to heavy grinding or chewing), we can easily repair or reapply them.
Lifespan of Sealants
With good care, sealants can last several years. They’re especially beneficial during the cavity-prone childhood and teen years, but may be recommended for adults too in certain cases.
When to Contact Us
Please get in touch with Renwick Dental if:
- The sealed tooth feels rough or uncomfortable after several days
- You or your child experience any toothache or sensitivity in the sealed tooth
- The sealant appears to have chipped or come off
