Post-Operative Care for Periodontal Maintenance

Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your periodontal maintenance appointment. We are committed to helping you achieve and maintain a healthy smile. Periodontal maintenance is a crucial part of managing gum disease and keeping your gums and teeth in optimal condition. After your visit with our hygienist, it’s important to follow the care guidelines below to support healing and minimise discomfort.

What to Expect After Your Appointment

Mild Gum Soreness or Tenderness
It’s normal to experience some soreness, tenderness, or slight bleeding from the gums following your periodontal cleaning, especially if deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) was performed. This should subside within a few days.

Sensitivity to Temperature or Pressure
Your teeth may feel more sensitive than usual, particularly to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks. This is temporary and should lessen over time.

Swelling or Discomfort
You might notice minor gum swelling or discomfort after treatment. Applying a cold compress for 15–20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling.

If you experience significant or prolonged pain, or if swelling gets worse instead of better, please contact our office.

Post-Care Instructions

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush gently: Continue brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Take extra care around the treated areas.
  • Floss daily: Flossing is especially important to keep the gum pockets clean. Be gentle but thorough.
  • Consider a mouth rinse: We may recommend a warm saltwater rinse (1 tsp salt in a cup of warm water) or a prescribed antimicrobial mouthwash to soothe the gums and reduce bacteria. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes unless advised otherwise.

Eating and Drinking

  • Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods for the first 24–48 hours to prevent irritation.
  • Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced, soft diet until tenderness subsides.

Pain Relief

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol can be taken as directed if you experience discomfort.
  • A cold compress can also be used on the outside of your cheek to reduce soreness or swelling.

    What to Expect Moving Forward

    Healing
Gums will gradually become less inflamed and tender as they heal. You may notice improved gum colour and reduced bleeding over the next week.

    Improved Gum Health
With consistent periodontal maintenance, you should see improvements in gum attachment and overall oral health. Regular visits are essential for managing periodontal disease.

    Next Appointments
Most patients with periodontal concerns benefit from maintenance cleanings every 3–4 months. Keeping up with these visits helps prevent disease progression.
