Post-Operative Care for Comprehensive Exam, Scale & Clean
Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your oral health care. A comprehensive examination, scale and clean is an essential part of maintaining a healthy mouth. After your visit, it’s normal to notice some temporary changes—especially if it’s been a while since your last clean. Here’s what to expect and how to care for your mouth afterward.
What to Expect After Your Appointment
Mild Gum Tenderness or Bleeding
It’s common to experience some light bleeding or tenderness around the gums for a day or two, especially if there was inflammation or buildup present. This should settle quickly as your gums begin to heal.
Sensitivity
You might notice mild sensitivity to cold foods, drinks, or air for a few days—particularly if tartar was removed from below the gumline or near the roots of the teeth. This is temporary and can be eased with sensitive toothpaste like Sensodyne.
Smoother, Cleaner Teeth
Your teeth may feel smoother than usual after the clean. This is because plaque and tartar have been professionally removed from the surface.
After-Care Instructions
Oral Hygiene at Home
- Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss once daily, even if your gums are a little tender—it will help them heal.
- You may rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp of salt in a glass of warm water) if your gums are sore.
Diet
- Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for the next 24 hours if you’re feeling sensitive.
- If fluoride was applied during your visit, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
For Ongoing Gum Health
If you’ve been diagnosed with early gum disease (gingivitis) or more advanced periodontal issues, your hygienist may recommend a tailored care plan or follow-up visits for more focused cleaning.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Long-Term Health
With regular visits and daily home care, your gums will become firmer, less sensitive, and bleed less over time.
Routine Recalls
Most patients benefit from a scale and clean every 6 months. Some may need more frequent hygiene visits—our team will guide you based on your individual needs.
X-Rays and Assessments
Your comprehensive exam helps us assess more than just your teeth—we check your jaw joints, soft tissues, gum health, and screen for oral cancer. Routine x-rays (usually every 2 years) help us monitor areas between the teeth and under existing fillings.

Please reach out to Renwick Dental if you experience:
- Bleeding that persists beyond a few days
