Pre-Operative Instructions for Your Dental Filling Appointment
At Renwick Dental, we’re here to restore your tooth to its natural strength and beauty with our high-quality, tooth-coloured composite fillings. Whether you have a cavity, a cracked tooth, or other damage, we aim to provide a comfortable and efficient experience. To help ensure your appointment goes smoothly and you get the best results, please follow these pre-operative instructions.
Before Your Appointment
Eat and Drink
- For Standard Fillings: You can eat before your appointment, but avoid consuming hard or sticky foods that may irritate your tooth.
Medications
- Continue taking your regular medications as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by our team.
- If you have any special medications for oral health (such as antibiotics), take them exactly as directed.
- Inform us if you are taking medications that could affect your healing process, such as blood thinners.
Oral Hygiene
- Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before your appointment to reduce the risk of infection and help ensure the best outcome from your treatment.
- Avoid using mouthwash with alcohol before your appointment, as it can irritate the treatment area.
Health Updates
- Please let us know if you’re feeling unwell, have a cold, or have any changes in your health, especially if you have a heart condition, diabetes, or other systemic conditions.
- Be sure to inform us about any allergies, particularly to medications, anesthesia, or dental materials.
Smoking and Alcohol
- Refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before your filling procedure. These substances can interfere with the healing process and may impact the bonding of the filling material.
What to Expect During Your Filling Appointment
Examination & Digital X-rays (If Needed)
- We will begin by evaluating the tooth to ensure we have a clear understanding of the extent of the decay or damage. If necessary, we may take digital X-rays to get a detailed view of the tooth.
Gentle Numbing
- To ensure your comfort, we will numb the area around the tooth that needs treatment. The numbing process will keep you relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure.
Decay Removal
- The decayed or damaged part of your tooth will be carefully removed, ensuring that the healthy portion of your tooth remains intact.
Placing the Filling
- Once the cavity is cleaned, we will place a tooth-colored composite resin material. The material is shaped and molded to perfectly match your tooth, restoring its natural form and function.
Finishing Touches
- The filling is hardened with a special light that activates the material, ensuring it stays in place. We will then polish the filling for a smooth and natural finish, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your smile.
You will leave your appointment with a fully restored tooth, ready to use as normal.
Procedure Duration
The procedure usually takes about 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the filling and the tooth being treated. If multiple fillings are being placed, the appointment may take longer.
Aftercare and Next Steps
Pain and Sensitivity Management
- It’s normal to experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity in the treated area for a few days, especially when chewing or drinking hot or cold beverages.
- This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen. If you experience significant pain or discomfort, please contact us right away.
Dietary Recommendations
- Avoid chewing on the treated tooth for 24 hours to give it time to set properly.
- Stick to soft foods for the first 24-48 hours after your filling. Avoid sticky, hard, or very hot and cold foods during this time.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue brushing and flossing as usual, but be gentle around the treated area, especially if the filling is still settling.
- If you experience any discomfort while flossing, avoid the treated area for a few days and be cautious with the amount of pressure you apply.
Follow-Up Appointments
- In most cases, no follow-up appointment is needed unless there are concerns about the filling’s fit or function. If you feel that the filling is high or uneven, please contact us to schedule an adjustment.
