Pre-Operative Instructions for EndoEase+ (Root Canal Therapy)
At Renwick Dental, we understand that the thought of a root canal can feel overwhelming, but our EndoEase+ treatment is designed to provide you with the best care possible while relieving pain, treating infection, and preserving your natural tooth. To help ensure that your procedure goes smoothly and you achieve the best results, please follow these pre-operative instructions.
Before Your Appointment
Eat and Drink
- If your root canal treatment is being performed with local anaesthesia only, you may eat a light meal beforehand. However, avoid consuming heavy meals, sticky foods, or hard foods that could irritate the tooth.
Medications
- Take your regular medications as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by our team.
- If antibiotics or special medication has been prescribed for your treatment, please ensure you take them exactly as directed.
Oral Hygiene
- Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before your appointment to help reduce the risk of infection and ensure your mouth is clean.
- Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol before your visit, as this can irritate the treated area.
Health Updates
- If you’re feeling unwell, have a cold, or have any new medical conditions (especially heart conditions), please notify us ahead of time.
- Be sure to inform us of any allergies, particularly to medications or dental materials.
Smoking and Alcohol
- Refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before your EndoEase+ procedure, as both can interfere with healing and your body’s response to treatment.
What to Expect During the Appointment
Local Anaesthesia
- The area will be thoroughly numbed with local anaesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. In some cases, sedation options are available to help you feel more at ease.
EndoEase+ Procedure (Root Canal Therapy)
- Stage 1: Extirpation (Pain Relief and Infection Control)
- A small access hole will be made in the affected tooth to remove the infected or damaged pulp (nerve tissue) inside.
- Antibacterial medication will be placed inside the tooth to disinfect the area.
- A temporary filling will be used to seal the tooth until the next stage.
- Stage 2: Mechanical Preparation (Cleaning and Shaping)
- Special instruments are used to clean and shape the root canals, removing any remaining debris or bacteria.
- The canals are then thoroughly disinfected to prepare them for sealing.
- Stage 3: Obturation (Sealing the Root Canals)
- The cleaned and shaped canals will be filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent reinfection.
- The tooth is sealed with a permanent filling to protect it from future damage.
- Stage 4: Final Restoration (Crown or Filling)
- Depending on the tooth and its location, we may recommend a crown or filling to restore the tooth’s function and protect it from further damage. This is typically placed in a follow-up appointment.
Aftercare and Next Steps
Pain Management
- Most patients experience significant pain relief after the infection is removed. It is normal to feel mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days post-treatment, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen.
- Ice packs can help reduce swelling if needed.
Dietary Recommendations
- Stick to soft foods for the first 24-48 hours following the procedure. Avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth until a permanent restoration (such as a crown) is placed.
Oral Hygiene
- Continue brushing and flossing gently around the treated area. Be cautious not to apply excessive pressure, especially if a temporary filling is used.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water to promote healing, but avoid vigorous rinsing.
Follow-Up Appointments
- A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to place a permanent crown or filling to restore your tooth’s strength and function.
- We’ll monitor your progress to ensure the healing process is going as expected.
