Post-Operative Care for Dental Implants
Thank you for choosing Renwick Dental for your dental implant treatment. Implants are a durable, long-term solution for missing teeth, and we’re here to ensure your healing process is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Below are some important post-operative care instructions to support your recovery and help your implant integrate successfully.
What to Expect After Your Implant Appointment
Mild Discomfort or Swelling
It’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, or minor bruising in the area around the implant for a few days following surgery. This is part of the body’s natural healing process.
Swelling usually peaks within 48–72 hours and then gradually subsides. Applying a cold compress on the outside of your face (15–20 minutes on, then off) can help reduce swelling.
Bleeding
Some light bleeding or oozing may occur during the first 24 hours. You can gently bite down on a piece of gauze for 30–60 minutes to help stop the bleeding. If it continues or becomes heavy, please contact us.
Sutures (Stitches)
If you received stitches, we’ll let you know if they will dissolve on their own or if you need to return to have them removed. Please avoid touching the area or pulling at the sutures.
Post-Implant Care Instructions
Oral Hygiene
- Be gentle around the implant site: You can brush your other teeth as normal, but avoid direct contact with the implant site for the first few days.
- Saltwater rinses: Starting 24 hours after surgery, rinse gently with warm saltwater (1 tsp of salt in a cup of warm water) 2–3 times a day, especially after meals.
- Avoid mouthwash for the first few days unless we have advised otherwise.
Eating and Drinking
- Stick to a soft diet for the first few days. Foods like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups, and smoothies are good options.
- Avoid chewing on the side with the implant.
- Refrain from eating hard, crunchy, or spicy foods while the area is healing.
- Avoid hot drinks in the first 24 hours, and do not use a straw, as this can disturb the healing site.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and alcohol can significantly delay healing and increase the risk of implant failure. We strongly recommend avoiding both for at least 2 weeks after surgery (longer if possible).
Pain Relief
You can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol as directed on the packaging. If stronger medication was prescribed, please follow the instructions carefully.
What to Expect Moving Forward
Healing Time
It typically takes a few months for the implant to fully integrate with the bone. During this time, it’s important to protect the area and follow all care instructions.
Follow-Up Visits
We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure the implant is integrating properly. Please attend all scheduled visits so we can support your recovery every step of the way.
Final Restoration
Once the implant is fully healed and integrated, we’ll move forward with placing your final crown, bridge, or denture on the implant. This stage completes your smile transformation.

- Excessive bleeding
- Swelling that worsens after 3 days
