Pre-Operative Instructions for Your Dental Implant Surgery

At Renwick Dental, your comfort and safety are our priority. Dental implants are a long-term solution for replacing missing teeth, and proper preparation is essential for a smooth procedure and optimal healing. Please carefully review the instructions below before your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

Eat a Light Meal (if having local anaesthetic only)

  • If your surgery is under local anaesthetic only, have a light meal 1–2 hours before your appointment.
  • If you are having sedation or general anaesthesia, fasting is required. Do not eat or drink for 6–8 hours prior — our team will confirm your specific fasting instructions.

Medications

  • Take any prescribed antibiotics or pre-medication exactly as instructed on the 1st page of the consent form you will have been given prior to your appointment.
  • Continue taking your regular medications unless otherwise advised.
  • Inform us well in advance if you take blood thinners or medications that affect healing — adjustments may be required in consultation with your GP or specialist.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss thoroughly before your appointment — keeping your mouth clean reduces the risk of infection.
  • You may be asked to rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash (like Chlorhexidine) prior to surgery — we’ll advise if this is needed.

Health Updates

  • Please let us know if you’re unwell, have a cold, flu, or if there are changes in your health status.
  • Inform us of any allergies, especially to medications, anaesthetic, or latex.
  • Notify us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Sinus pain is relevant if your implant is being places in the upper molar region.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery. Ideally, stop smoking 1–2 weeks before and after your implant procedure — smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure.
  • Do NOT drink alcohol for 2 weeks after surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

    • Arrival & Review: Our team will review your medical history, confirm any medications taken, and answer last-minute questions.
    • Anaesthetic: The area will be numbed with local anaesthetic. Surgical Procedure:
A small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone.
A precise hole is drilled into the bone where the implant will be placed using a guide.
The dental implant (a small titanium screw) is inserted into the bone.
In some cases, a bone graft may be placed if additional support is needed.
    • A healing cap or cover screw is placed over the implant.
The gum is closed with stitches — these may be dissolvable or require removal later.
    • Duration: The entire procedure typically takes 60–90 minutes per implant, but this may vary based on the complexity of your case.
    • Immediate Aftercare: You’ll be monitored briefly before being discharged with post-operative care instructions.

    Aftercare and Recovery

    • Before you leave, we’ll provide full post-operative instructions, including:
    • How to manage bleeding and swelling
    • Pain relief advice
    • Dietary restrictions — stick to soft foods for several days
    • Oral hygiene care around the surgical site
    • Follow-up appointments for review and future steps (such as placing the crown)
