Pre-Operative Instructions for Your Dental Veneers Appointment
At Renwick Dental, we want to ensure you feel informed and comfortable heading into your crown or bridge appointment. Please review the following instructions to help your procedure go smoothly and achieve the best results.
Before Your Appointment
Eat Normally
- You can eat a light meal before your appointment as the procedure is typically done under local anaesthetic.
Medications
- Continue taking your regular medications unless advised otherwise.
- Please inform us if you’re taking any blood thinners, as adjustments may be necessary.
- If prescribed pre-medications (such as antibiotics), take them as directed.
Oral Hygiene
- Brush and floss your teeth as normal prior to your appointment — keeping your mouth clean helps reduce bacteria and ensure optimal results.
- Health Updates
- Notify us if there are any changes to your medical history or medications.
- Let us know if you are feeling unwell, experiencing cold or flu symptoms, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Inform us of any allergies, particularly to medications, anaesthetic, or materials.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
- Refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment — ideally, reduce smoking throughout your veneer treatment as it can impact healing and stain the veneers.
What to Expect on the Day of Your Veneer Preparation Appointment
Your veneer treatment is typically completed in two stages: Preparation and Final Placement.
Stage 1: Veneer Preparation
- Review & Consent: We’ll confirm your treatment plan and answer any last-minute questions.
- Anaesthetic: Local anaesthetic is used to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.
- Tooth Preparation: A thin layer of enamel is gently removed from the front surface of the teeth to make space for the veneers.
- Impressions: Precise digital or traditional impressions are taken and sent to our dental lab to create your custom veneers.
- Temporary Veneers: In most cases, temporary veneers are placed to protect your prepared teeth and give you a preview of your new smile.
What to Expect with Temporaries:
- Temporaries are designed to look natural but are not as strong as your final veneer, the surface texture will be different to your final veneers and in some cases you may experience some sensitivity. Be sure to note that this will not be the case when your final veneers are placed.
- Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods.
- Avoid foods with strong colours, such as red wine, curries, tomato-based foods, or coffee, that may stain your temporary veneers. It’s best to stick to lighter-coloured foods and beverages while wearing the temporaries.
- Be cautious when flossing to avoid dislodging or damaging your temporary veneers. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and avoid using too much force.
Looking Ahead to Your Veneer Placement
- Your custom veneers will be ready in 2–3 weeks.
- At your next appointment, we’ll remove the temporary veneers, try in the permanent ones, and bond them securely in place for a natural, lasting result.
Aftercare
Before you leave, we’ll provide full care instructions for your temporary veneers and answer any questions about your final placement appointment.
