Pre-Operative Instructions for Fissure Sealants

At Renwick Dental, we’re committed to protecting your teeth from decay and ensuring long-term dental health. Fissure sealants are a safe and effective way to protect the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars) from cavities. To ensure the best results, please follow these simple pre-operative instructions.

Before Your Appointment

Eat and Drink

  • It is advisable to have a light meal before your appointment. However, avoid eating hard, sticky, or sugary foods as these may affect the process or irritate your teeth.
  • If you’re undergoing sedation for the procedure, you may need to fast for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment. You will receive additional instructions if this applies to you.

Medications

  • Continue taking any prescribed medications as usual unless otherwise directed by our team.
  • If you have been given antibiotics or special medications for your procedure, please make sure to follow the instructions and take them as directed.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before your appointment to help reduce plaque buildup and ensure a clean surface for applying the sealant.
  • Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol before the appointment, as it can dry out the surfaces of your teeth.

Health Updates

  • If you are feeling unwell, have a cold, or are experiencing any new medical conditions, please let us know in advance.
  • Inform us of any allergies, particularly to dental materials or anesthesia.

Smoking and Alcohol

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours prior to your fissure sealant appointment, as both can affect the bonding process and healing.

What to Expect During Your Fissure Sealant Appointment

Examination and Evaluation

  • We will first assess your teeth to ensure that fissure sealants are appropriate for you. In some cases, we may take digital X-rays to examine the grooves and fissures in your molars and premolars.

Tooth Cleaning

  • Your hygienist will clean the surfaces of your teeth to remove any plaque or debris. This ensures a clean, smooth surface for the sealant to bond to.

Drying and Isolation

  • Once your tooth is clean, we will dry and isolate the treated area to keep it free of moisture, which is crucial for the sealant to bond properly.

Sealant Application

  • A special dental sealant material will be applied to the grooves of your back teeth. The material is a thin, tooth-colored resin that flows into the natural pits and fissures, where cavities are most likely to form.

Curing the Sealant

  • The sealant will be hardened (or “cured”) using a special light. This light activates the resin, causing it to solidify and form a durable protective layer.

Final Check and Polishing

  • After curing, we will check the bite and smooth the surface to ensure the sealant fits perfectly. We may polish the treated area to make it as smooth as the rest of your tooth.

You’ll leave with your teeth protected from future decay, ready to chew and enjoy your food as usual!

Procedure Duration

The procedure is quick and comfortable, usually taking 15-30 minutes per tooth, depending on the number of teeth being treated. If multiple teeth are being sealed, it may take a bit longer.

Aftercare and Next Steps

No Special Care Needed

  • There’s no downtime after getting fissure sealants. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure.
  • You may experience slight sensitivity to hot or cold for the first 24 hours, but this is usually temporary and should resolve soon after.

Dietary Recommendations

  • After treatment, you can eat and drink as usual, but it’s best to avoid hard or sticky foods (like gum or candy) for the first 24 hours to ensure the sealant sets properly.
  • Avoid chewing directly on the treated surfaces for the first day if you’re concerned about damaging the fresh sealant.

Oral Hygiene

  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual. Be sure to clean the areas around the sealed grooves, but do so gently. Avoid using abrasive toothpaste, as this can damage the sealant.
  • Regular visits for cleanings and check-ups are essential to monitor the integrity of the sealants and your overall oral health.

Follow-Up Appointments

  • Fissure sealants typically last for several years, but regular check-ups will allow us to monitor the condition of the sealants and make adjustments as necessary.
  • If a sealant becomes chipped or worn, we may need to reapply it to continue protecting the tooth.
