Pre-Operative Instructions for Periodontal Treatment with Our Hygienist

At Renwick Dental, we prioritise your gum health and overall well-being. Periodontal treatment is an important step in preventing gum disease, improving oral hygiene, and maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. To help ensure the best possible results from your treatment, please follow these pre-operative instructions.

Before Your Appointment

Eat and Drink

  • It’s recommended to have a light meal before your appointment if you are having a standard cleaning or periodontal treatment. Avoid heavy, spicy, or acidic foods, which may irritate your gums.
  • If you have been scheduled for a more extensive procedure (such as scaling and root planing), avoid eating 1-2 hours before your appointment to minimize discomfort.

Medications

  • Continue taking any medications as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by our team.
  • If you are on antibiotics or have been prescribed any special medications related to your periodontal treatment, be sure to follow the instructions and take them exactly as directed.
  • If you are on blood thinners (such as aspirin or warfarin), please inform us in advance, as we may need to adjust your treatment or coordinate with your physician.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before your appointment. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for the success of your periodontal treatment.
  • Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol before the procedure, as this can irritate your gums and reduce the effectiveness of your treatment.

Health Updates

  • If you are feeling unwell, have a cold, or have any new medical conditions, please let us know ahead of time.
  • Be sure to inform us about any allergies you may have, especially to medications, anesthetics, or latex.
  • If you have any history of heart conditions, diabetes, or other systemic health issues, please inform your hygienist so we can take appropriate precautions.

Smoking and Alcohol

  • Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol at least 24 hours before your periodontal treatment. Both can impede healing and increase the risk of complications.

What to Expect During the Appointment

Local Anesthesia (If Needed)

  • For more extensive treatments such as scaling and root planing, local anesthesia may be used to numb the affected areas and ensure your comfort. Most patients find the procedure relatively painless, but sedation options are available if you’re feeling anxious.

Periodontal Treatment Procedure

Stage 1: Cleaning and Evaluation

  • Your hygienist will begin by examining the health of your gums and reviewing your oral hygiene habits. They will measure the depth of any gum pockets and look for signs of gum disease.
  • A professional cleaning will be performed, including removing plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth both above and below the gumline.

Stage 2: Scaling and Root Planing (If Necessary)

  • If you have gum disease or significant tartar buildup, a more extensive treatment called scaling and root planing may be performed. This involves deep cleaning of the root surfaces below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar and smooth the roots to encourage healthy gum reattachment.

Stage 3: Additional Treatments (If Necessary)

  • In some cases, additional treatments such as antimicrobial rinses or local antibiotics may be applied to help promote healing and reduce inflammation.

Aftercare and Next Steps

Pain and Sensitivity Management

  • It is common to experience some mild discomfort, tenderness, or sensitivity in the gums following periodontal treatment, particularly if scaling and root planing was performed. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen.
  • If you experience significant pain, swelling, or discomfort, please contact us immediately.

Dietary Recommendations

  • For the first 24-48 hours after your treatment, avoid consuming very hot, cold, or spicy foods, as well as foods that are hard to chew.
  • Stick to soft foods (like yogurt, soup, or mashed potatoes) to avoid irritating the treated areas.

Oral Hygiene

  • Continue brushing and flossing as usual, but be gentle around the treated area for the first few days.
  • Your hygienist may recommend a special toothpaste or mouthwash to help with healing or reduce sensitivity. Be sure to follow their advice closely.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing or forceful brushing in the treated area for a few days to allow the gums to heal properly.

Follow-Up Appointments

  • A follow-up appointment will likely be scheduled to monitor your progress and assess the healing of your gums. If needed, additional treatments or maintenance cleanings will be discussed.
  • If your periodontal treatment involved scaling and root planing, follow-up care is essential to ensure the health of your gums and the success of the treatment.
